Find the node before you make the cut

The node is a thickened joint on the main stem, usually where a leaf petiole and aerial root emerge. Nearby, the axillary bud may look like a small raised eye or bump. That bud—not the decorative leaf—is where a new shoot can begin.

Trace the petiole back to the vine instead of cutting the leaf stalk by itself. Plan the cut through the internode, leaving enough stem around the node to handle without slicing into it. An aerial root can help identify the area and may speed establishment, but it does not substitute for a viable node.

  1. Place the node and any aerial-root base in a clean vessel. Keep the leaf blades and most of the petiole above the water line.

Air layering lets a node form roots while it is still supplied by the mother plant. Hold moist sphagnum or another airy propagation medium around the chosen node and aerial-root base, then wrap it so moisture is retained but the site can still be monitored. Keep the medium damp, not dripping.

Once a useful root system is visible through the wrap, cut the stem below the rooted node and pot it. This is particularly useful when a large top cutting would be difficult to support or when you want evidence of roots before separating a valuable plant.

Can you divide a Monstera?

Sometimes—but division is not the same as slicing one vine and root ball into arbitrary pieces. Extra caution with variegated cuttings

A highly white cutting has less chlorophyll and therefore less capacity to support itself. Prefer a cutting with useful green tissue as well as an intact node and growth point. The pattern on one leaf does not guarantee the exact pattern of future leaves; the location and stability of variegation through the stem matter.
